How to calculate Retention Rate

  1. Define the business scope, reporting period, and the event or status that qualifies for Retention Rate.
  2. Collect each input in the workbook formula from systems that use the same cut-off and unit.
  3. Remove duplicates and exclusions according to the documented rule, while retaining a reconciliation count.
  4. Apply ((Total Employees - Employees Who Left) ÷ Total Employees) × 100 and label the result with its period, unit, and relevant segment.

Retention Rate example

A fictional team uses one scope and period for every Retention Rate input.

  1. Employees = 1,200; Employees Who Left = 600.
  2. Employees = 1,200.
  3. Retention Rate = (1,200 − 600) ÷ 1,200 × 100 = 50%.

Retention Rate is 50%.

The calculation preserves the workbook order: first take the difference, then divide by the stated comparison base.
